The annual race uses a significant portion of this path, turning the Volcano Route into an international stage for elite trail runners. The ultramarathon spans 73.3 kilometers with a total elevation gain of 8,086 meters, starting at the Fuencaliente Lighthouse and finishing in Los Llanos de Aridane.

Recommendations for hikers
To safely and comfortably enjoy this trail, the following is recommended:
Bring plenty of water and food, as there are no water sources along the way.
Use sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses, especially in areas without shade.
Wear appropriate hiking boots for volcanic terrain.
Carry warm clothing and a rain jacket, as the weather can change rapidly.
Start early, as the route can take between 6 and 7 hours without stops.
Be in good physical shape, as the trail involves significant elevation changes.
Respect the environment and stay on marked paths.
Carry a fully charged mobile phone for emergencies.

Highlights of the trail
The route starts at Refugio del Pilar at an altitude of 1,479 m, passing through a Canary pine forest. It then ascends to its highest point at Las Deseadas at 1,939 m. From there, the trail descends, offering stunning panoramic views, including clear days when other islands like Tenerife, El Hierro, and La Gomera can be seen.
The final stretch includes the option to visit the San Antonio Volcano Visitor Center (paid entry) before reaching the Salinas de Fuencaliente, where this fascinating volcanic journey concludes.

This trail not only provides a unique geological experience but also the opportunity to observe vegetation recovery on volcanic terrain, creating a captivating contrast between the black volcanic sand and the green emerging flora.
